MATH NOTES JAN 6 2011

Here are the notes that we wrote down today.

Out of a hundred is also know as Percent.

A number over 1 us also known as Decimal.
A whole number over a whole number is also known as a Fraction.

Convert each fraction into a percent and also a decimal.

This is how to convert this fraction into a percent. The fraction is 1/2. Since percentage is out of 100 we needed to find a way to turn 2 into 100. So we multiplied it by 50 , and multiplied 1 by 50 because what we do on the bottom we also do on the top. The answer is 50 percent.

This is how to convert this fraction into a decimal. The fraction is 1/2. Since decimal numbers are over 1 we need to find a way to turn 2 into 1. So we divided 2 by 2 and we got 1 and we divided 1 also by 2 and got 0.5. What we do to the bottom we also do to the top. The answer is 0.5.

The fraction is 3/4. The percentage is 75 %. The decimal is 0.75. For percentage we multiply the 3 and the 4 by 25 and then we get 75/100. For decimal we divide the 3 and the 4 by 4 and get 0.75/1.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The fraction is 2/5. The percentage is 40 %. The decimal is 0.4. For percentage we multiply the 2 and the 5 by 20 and then we get 40/100. For decimal we divide the 2 and the 5 by 5 and get 0.4/1.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The fraction is 1/3. The percentage is around 30 %. The decimal is 0.3. This is a little different.
For decimal we divide the 1 and 3 by 3 and get 0.3-repeating/1. Now we have to use 0.3-repeating/1 and multiply is by 100 to get the percentage. 1/3 is not easy to convert to a percentage so we used the equivalent fraction which is 0.3-repeating/1.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Convert the decimal to a percentage and also a fraction.
The decimal number is 0.125/1. To get the percentage we multiply the 0.125 and 1 by 100 and get 12.5 %. To get the fraction we multiplied the 0.125 and 1 by 1000 and got 125/1000. Then we divided 125 and 1000 by 125 and got 1/8. The fraction is 1/8.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The decimal number is 0.6/1. To get the percentage we multiply 0.6 and 1 by 100 and get 60/100. To get the fraction we multiply 0.6 and 1 by 10 and get 6/10 then we divide that by 2 and get 3/5.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
