Parallelogram

Parallelogram- a four sided figure with opposite sides parallel and equal in length.

Base- a side of a closed 2d figure.
- common symbol is b

Height- the perpendicular distance from the base to the opposite side.
- common symbol is h.

This is what some of the parallelograms look like.

Area of a Parallelogram.
To find the area of a parallelogram, you need to do Base x Height (b x h).

Height is the one the look likes the letter h.

How to make a perpendicular bisector

Definition of the word 'Bisect':
Bi=two
Sect=cut
Bisect=to cut on two

There are 3 way on how to make a perpendicular bisector:

Way #1:
What you'll need:
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Compass(math tool)
  • Ruler

  1. You first draw a line segment. Lable the ends line segment AB
  2. Place the sharp end of the compass on point A.
  3. Make an arc that is slightly larger than half of the length of the line segment.
  4. Repeat the process to point B. *REMEMBER USE THE SAME SIZE OF THE ARC USED ON POINT A!*
  5. With a ruler join the two are intersections with a straight line.

Way #2:
You will need the following...
  • Pencil
  • Right triangle
  • Paper
  • Ruler

  1. Draw a line segment. Lable the points AB
  2. Measure the line segment with a ruler.
  3. Devide the measure in half; that is now called the half way point.
  4. Use the right triangle to create a perpendicular line a the half way point.

Way #3:
You will need the following...
  • Pencil
  • Paper
  1. Draw a line segment. Lable the points EF.
  2. *Make sure you're in a well lit room.*
  3. Fold the paper so point A falls right on top of point B.
  4. This will make the crease a perpendicular bisector!

line segments

How to construct perpendicular line segments :

1. Use a ruler to draw a line segment AB
2. Place the edge of a right triangle on the line segment AB

How to construct parallel line segments :
1. use a ruler to draw line segment CD
2. use a right triangle to make a perpendicular line segment .
3.
slide the right triangle left or right along the line segment CD and draw another
perpendicular line segment lableled GH .

B- Brackets

E- Exponents

D- Division

(In order from left to right)

M- Multiplication

A- Addition

(In order from left to right)

S- Subtraction

Q:
Annie has been asked to calculate 1.7+6 divided 2. She claims that the answer is 3.85. Do you agree?
Explain why or why not
i don't agree because she didnt use BEDMAS

Example:
24-4 multiply 2 + 3=
24 - 8 + 3=
16 + 3 = 19

Another example

2 multiply(4+8) divide 2 - 1=
(4+8) divide 2 - 1=
2 multiply 12 divide 2 - 1 =
12 - 1 = 11
Brackets comes first because it's first on bedmas.

BEDMAS

E- exponents

D- division

(In order from left to right)

M- multiplication x

A- addition +

(In order from left to right)

S- subtraction -

Q:
Annie has been asked to calculate 1.7 + 6 divided 2. She claims that the answer is 3.85. Do you agree?
EXPLAIN WHY OR WHY NOT!

I don't agree because she didn't use BEDMAS.

EXAMPLE

(2+3)-1=
Brackets come first come first because It's fist on Bedmas.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE

6-7x5=
Multiplication goes fist because It's before everything else if you use Bedmas.
